Who is the Oracle of Omaha?
Warren Buffet, an American business magnate, investor, and philanthropist, is nicknamed the Oracle of Omaha.

The term Oracle refers to a person with the utmost specialty and whom people go to for guidance and to predict future events. He’s called Oracle of Omaha because Warren Buffet’s firm is based out of Omaha.

(Explained in detail in the video)

History
Warren Edward Buffet was born on 30th August 1930. In 1942, just at 12, he bought his first stock.

He began delivering the Washington Post at 13 and earned almost $2000 within 2 years. Later on, he invested $1,200 in a 40-acre farm in Nebraska.

All this led to Warren Buffet building savings of around $5,000 before he turned 20.

His investment philosophy was greatly influenced by Benjamin Graham, another legendary investor from whom he realized the relevance of value investing.

How did he become the Oracle of Omaha?
In 1962, Warren Buffet became a millionaire when he boosted his investor’s assets to over $7.2 million, of which he owned a stake worth a million dollars.

He was worth $250 million by 1982, $620 million by 1983, and he hit the billion dollar mark in 1985, in the same year Berkshire Hathaway’s stocks hit the $100,000 mark.

He is currently worth around $100 billion. He has pledged his net worth to the Melinda Gates Foundation and donated around $37 billion to his charitable endeavors.

How to Account for Early Retirement of Bonds [Video]

This video explains how to account for the early retirement of bonds (aka early extinguishment of debt or early redemption of bonds). When a company retires (redeems) its bonds prior to the maturity date, the company must do several things:-Reduce the cash account by the amount used to repurchase the bonds (if cash is used to retire the bonds)-Remove the bonds payable-Zero out the unamortized discount or unamortized premium-Record a gain or loss IF the repurchase price is different from the carrying value (aka book value) of the bonds on the date the bonds are retiredThere are two ways to calculate the gain or loss on the early retirement of the bonds:(1) record the journal entry; if a debit is required to make the journal entry balance, then debit a loss on early retirement (or loss on bond redemption, loss on early extinguishment of debt, etc.). If a credit is instead required to make the journal entry balance, the credit a gain on early retirement (or gain on bond redemption, gain on early extinguishment of debt, etc.)(2) calculate the difference between the repurchase price (the amount paid to retire the bonds) and carrying value (aka book value) of the bonds at the time they are retired. If the repurchase price is less than the carrying value, there is a gain. If the repurchase price is greater than the carrying value, there is a loss.0:00 Introduction0:39 4 things to do when retiring bonds1:20 Example3:59 T-account for discount on bonds payable4:18 Journal entry to record gain on retirement of bonds5:53 Alternative situation (loss on retirement of bonds)— Edspira is the creation of Michael McLaughlin, an award-winning professor who went from teenage homelessness to a PhD. Where to Find Advertising Expense in the Financial Statements [Video]

Because advertising expense is an expense you might think it would appear on a company's income statement. But advertising expense doesn't appear as a line item on the income statement for most publicly-traded companies. Instead, advertising expense is buried within the line item "selling, general, and administrative expense" (aka SG&A expense). Thus, to find a company's advertising expense you need to go to the notes that accompany the financial statements. In the notes, companies will typically tell you the amount of advertising expense that was included in selling, general, and administrative expense. Deferred advertising costs (advertising costs that have NOT yet been expensed) are typically included in the prepaid expenses account on the balance sheet. Thus, advertising costs are reported as follows: -Advertising expense is reported as part of SG&A expense on the income statement -Deferred advertising / prepaid advertising is reported as part of prepaid expense on the balance sheet — Edspira is the creation of Michael McLaughlin, an award-winning professor who went from teenage homelessness to a PhD.
