Free therapy sessions offered to Milwaukee firefighters [Video]

DURATION OF THE TRIAL. THE MILWAUKEE FIRE DEPARTMENT IS HOPING TO EXTINGUISH THE STIGMA SURROUNDING MENTAL HEALTH CARE, AS 12 NEWS MALLORY ANDERSON REPORTS FROM MMD HEADQUARTERS ON WELLS AND JAMES LOVELL, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND A VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION ARE NOW OFFERING FIREFIGHTER FREE THERAPY. MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH AND STARTING ON MAY FIRST, FULLY FUNDED THERAPY SESSIONS WILL BE OFFERED TO ALL MILWAUKEE FIREFIGHTER ERS. THE MILWAUKEE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND IGNITE THE SPIRIT MILWAUKEE ARE LAUNCHING THIS NEW PROGRAM WITH THE ALL HANDS INITIATIVE. IGNITE THE SPIRIT WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2018 AND OFFERS EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL SUPPORT TO FIREFIGHTERS AND THEIR FAMILIES DURING TIMES OF NEED. THESE FREE THERAPY SESSIONS WILL BE FACILITATED BY LICENSED MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS FROM FIRST RESPONDERS, PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES, LLC. ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION, FIREFIGHTERS ARE AT A HIGHER RISK OF EXPERIENCING MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES SUCH AS PTSD, DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY DUE TO THE DEMANDING NATURE OF FIREFIGHTING THAT INCLUDES EXPOSURE TO TRAUMA, LONG HOURS AND HIGH STRESS ENVIRONMENTS. I DONT BELIEVE, AND IM NOT TRAINED OR CERTIFIED TO MAKE THIS DECLARATION, BUT I DO FEEL THAT THE HUMAN BRAIN, THE HUMAN PSYCHE, IS NOT DESIGNED FOR THIS ONSLAUGHT THAT OUR FIREFIGHTERS AND PARAMEDICS ARE DEALING WITH EVERY DAY. SO IM CONFIDENT. IM HOPEFUL THAT WELL SEE OUR MEMBERS LEARN HOW TO BREATHE AGAIN, LEARN HOW TO SMILE AGAIN, AND LEARN HOW TO REALLY, REALLY ENJOY LIFE AGAIN, AGAIN.
