High school senior breaks neck in state wrestling championship, father says [Video]

ATLANTA (WANF/Gray News) – A high school senior suffered a broken neck during a state wrestling championship last week.

Dominic Haines was injured at the Georgia High School Association State Championships in Macon last Thursday.

According to his father, Keith Haines, Dominic Haines underwent surgery that put a cage around his spine to help with the pressure. He will have a second surgery Thursday to re-fuse his vertebrae.

“I hate seeing my boy in so much pain,” Keith Haines wrote in a social media update. “If the old saying, ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ is true, I better watch out when he’s back in action because he’s going to be a machine.”

Keith Haines said his son has regained feeling from the chest up.

During a physical therapy session, a therapist said she could also feel some of his leg muscles starting to engage on the right side.
