There are three theories to explain the shape of the yield curve. Expectation theory says the long-term yield of a financial instrument is the average of the short-term yields that are expected to occur over the life of the instrument. Thus: • An upward yield curve means investors expect short-term yields to rise in the future • A downward yield curve means investors expect short-term yields to decline in the futureThe yield curve, therefore, changes as investors’ expectations about future short-term yields change. This explains why yields with different maturities tend to move together. Market segmentation theory says that yields for different terms are based on supply and demand. In short, some investors have a preference for financial instruments with a certain maturity, and these preferences determine yields. The downside of market segmentation theory is that it fails to explain why yields with different maturities tend to move together.Liquidity premium theory is a combination of expectations theory and market segmentation theory. According to this theory, the long-term yield is the average of short-term yields throughout the life of the bond plus a liquidity premium that represents the supply and demand for bonds at that term.— Edspira is the creation of Michael McLaughlin, an award-winning professor who went from teenage homelessness to a PhD. The yield curve may take four general shapes:(1) upward-sloping(2) flat(3) downward-sloping(4) variableThe upward yield curve is the most common, as longer terms generally have higher yields. This is because investors demand a liquidity premium for the greater risk associated with a long-term investment. The downward yield curve is called an “inverted” yield curve. An inverted yield curve means short-term financial instruments have a higher yield than long-term instruments. The inverted yield curve doesn’t occur frequently, and it has historically preceded recessions. A flat yield curve means there is little to no difference in yields between short-term and long-term financial instruments.A variable yield curve can take many different shapes.— Edspira is the creation of Michael McLaughlin, an award-winning professor who went from teenage homelessness to a PhD. Income from illegal activities is considered taxable income. The IRS says illegal income, including income from dealing drugs, must be reported on your tax return. You can report illegal income in one of two ways. If you stole money, received a bribe, or were hired to kill someone, you would report the income on line 8 of Schedule 1 where it says, “Other income.”But if you earned money from an illegal business, like a money laundering operation, you would report the income on Schedule C. This way you can take deductions for wages, rent, and other expenses of your business. There’s an exception for drug traffickers, however, as they only get a deduction for the cost of goods sold. — Edspira is the creation of Michael McLaughlin, an award-winning professor who went from teenage homelessness to a PhD. Long-term capital gains are taxed at 0, 15, or 20% depending on your income. Short-term capital gains, however, are taxed at your ordinary tax rate. Thus, if youre planning to sell a stock, and you can hold on to it for at least 12 months and 1 day, your gain will be taxed at a lower rate. Now if you have a high income you might also incur a net investment income tax of 3.8% on short-term and long-term capital gains. Also, President Biden has proposed to tax long-term capital gains as ordinary income if you have taxable income above $1 million. He wants to increase the top tax bracket to 39.6%, so that means the maximum rate on long-term capital gains would be 39.6% (plus the 3.8% net investment income tax).
